Crosland Brings Harris Teeter to Austin Village

Charlotte, N.C., December 6, 2005 – Crosland Inc., one of the Southeast’s leading developers, has announced plans for a 48,756-square-foot Harris Teeter grocery store at the 19-acre neighborhood retail component of Austin Village, a mixed-use development at the corner of Potter Road and Chestnut Lane in Indian Trail, N.C.

“This neighborhood center will add convenience for northwest Union County residents by offering a grocery store at their back door,” said Peter B. Pappas, retail division president of Crosland. “Customers will no longer need to travel to Matthews to shop for their families, saving time and money with an option closer to home.”

Crosland is partnering in a joint venture with Merrifield Partners, Crosland’s office and industrial affiliate responsible for the master planning of the 100-acre Vickery estate. Austin Village’s initial commercial phase is complete, including a Kids ‘R’ Kids child-care center and 12,000 square feet of offices. A second 12,000-square-foot office building will open late next year. Crosland is developing and leasing the neighborhood-oriented retail component that will eventually total 100,000 square feet, anchored by the Harris Teeter which will open in 2008, along with shops and restaurants.

With the input of the Vickery family, who has owned the land for six generations, Austin Village has been designed to resemble an English village by incorporating a central village green and stone-and-stucco finishes.

“It is instrumental to our vision for this mixed-use project that we have an upscale grocery store, and Harris Teeter fits this perfectly,” said Ken Chapman, development partner with Merrifield Partners. “Harris Teeter is a trusted partner who we know will benefit from the walkable village concept and blend with our old English architecture.”

The new store will feature a wide variety of grocery and dairy products, along with full-service meat, seafood and fresh foods departments. In addition, the store will offer natural foods and organic sections, sushi, Certified Angus Beef, Coinstar and many other amenities for which Harris Teeter is noted.

Matthews, N.C.-based Harris Teeter is the 37th largest supermarket in the United States with $2.57 billion in sales in 2004. The grocery store chain employs more than 15,000 associates and has 141 stores in North and South Carolina, Virginia, Georgia, Tennessee and Florida.
