 - Crosland Green Team – 14 members, comprised of at least one employee from each division and each region. The multi-disciplinary Green Team meets monthly for education and to work on integrating sustainability into daily practices and projects.
- Full-time Manager of Sustainability, Jenny Vallimont – Jenny is a LEED AP and has her Masters of Architectural Engineering from Penn State University. She leads the Green Team, works with all operating divisions to help navigate various green building programs, and helps development managers brainstorm implementation of sustainable practices and technologies into their projects. During the summer an intern also joined the team, devoted completely to sustainability initiatives.
- Subcommittees led by a Green Team member focus on specific sustainability items:
- Green Office Initiatives - Carbon Rally Club - Existing Properties - Site Sustainability - Divisional Goals - Programs & Certifications - Recycling  - National Member of the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) – Crosland employs 24 LEED APs and supports associates through divisional green funds to encourage involvement in conferences, workshops and taking the LEED exam.
- Establishment of recurring ‘Gimme Some Green’ internal ideas competition encouraging employees to share original ways to improve sustainability within our company – after the initial contest resulted in more than 100 entries, the winners received cash prizes and various recognition.
- April 2008 Green Kickoff – the Manager of Sustainability unveiled the sustainability mission statement, expanding awareness of Crosland’s current and future sustainability programs. Employees received a reusable grocery bag containing an aluminum water bottle, “greening tips,” and a water kit. Through a creative raffle of sustainable prizes – some of which, such as a recycled tire planter, were manufactured from recycled materials by members of the Green Team – associates learned about local arts, organic food and recycled products. The kickoff was held at ImaginOn – Charlotte’s first public USGBC-certified building.
- Crosland’s United Way “Commitment Day” was focused on sustainability, creating an outdoor learning lab at a Briarwood Elementary. Projects included an outdoor classroom, a bird habitat with houses built from reclaimed materials, educational signage and planter boxes for a butterfly garden, native plants, pizza farm and a plant zoo.
PROJECT INITIATIVES
- Implementation of sustainable strategies on various projects including: infill site selection, development densities greater than 25 units/acre, parking decks to reduce impervious area, white roofs, Energy Star appliances, Low-E glass, high efficiency HVAC, increased insulation, reclaimed water for irrigation, constructed wetlands, innovative BMPs, and native plants.
 - Establishment of Sustainable Placemaking Design Challenge – Crosland developed and sponsored a design competition for consultants, architects and engineers to work in integrated teams to propose sustainable features for implementation on the forthcoming Crosland Greens transit-oriented redevelopment. The challenge received 12 team proposals from all over the world, and team members put hundreds of hours into the proposals. Crosland hosted final Open House at Alpha Mill Apartments – an award-winning Adaptive Re-use community developed by Crosland. The Open House allowed teams to meet, collaborate and learn from other teams’ ideas. The Sustainable Placemaking Design Challenge received a Triangle Business Journal Green Award in the For-Profit Action category.
- Crosland has three ongoing LEED-registered projects under construction and is participating in the LEED-ND (Neighborhood Development) pilot program.
- Plant Rescue at Cornerstone retail site – Volunteers from the NC Native Plant Society and UNCC’s Horticulture Department were on site to educate Crosland participants on native plants. After an educational session, volunteers rescued plants that were either donated to a local school garden or were propagated to sell for charity. This rescue will be used as a model for other Crosland projects.
- Project sustainability templates – easy-to-use documents focused on reporting and tracking sustainability goals and measurements, developed and introduced to all divisions for new projects.
EDUCATIONAL INITIATIVES
- Digital monthly Green E-Letters – the Green E-Letter is a continuous educational tool for associates. We provide useful facts, tips and news about sustainability. In addition, we share lessons learned from our projects and associates throughout the company to better connect our multiple offices.
- Development of Contractor Sustainability Training Video – to educate and train the onsite construction teams on key sustainability practices. Beginning with new projects in 2009, any person working on a Crosland project must undergo this training.
 - Monthly Lunch ’n’ Learns featuring the PBS series e2 – associates are encouraged to eat lunch in the office and participate in a discussion based on various topics covered in the PBS series e2.
- Crosland Resident Green Guide - an educational guide for all condo or apartment residents in North Carolina, Florida or Tennessee that introduces sustainable living practices, practical knowledge and tools necessary to live responsibly.
OFFICE INITIATIVES
 - Renewable Energy Certificates – Crosland purchases Renewable Energy Certificates to subsidize 100% of Crosland offices’ energy consumption.
- EPA Green Power Partner – These green power purchases help reduce the environmental impacts of electricity use and support the development of new renewable generation capacity nationwide. Crosland is a 100% Green Power Purchaser with a 2008 Green Power Usage of 524,000 kWh.
- Raleigh regional office upfit in 2008 included sustainable standards such as low-VOC paint, light sensors, recycled-material floor tile and wall coverings, CFL bulbs, FSC wood, reused furniture, Energy Star appliances and low-flow plumbing fixtures.
- Visible reinforcement of our Sustainability Mission Statement in Charlotte office lounge and on the corporate website – “Through progressive development practices, Crosland creates sustainable places that balance environmental accountability and social innovation with economic viability.”
- Crosland’s corporate headquarters, regional offices and all residential communities are participating in a Battery and Cell Phone recycling program through Call2Recycle.
